Our 2022 Interactive Annual Report
Despite the housing affordability crisis, the rental squeeze and long social housing waitlists, Head Start Homes is making home ownership a reality for those who never thought it possible.
You can learn more in our 2022 interactive annual report which showcases our unique solutions including our pathway from homelessness to home ownership.
Within the report you will hear directly from our single mum and First Nations clients on how we have supported them to become proud homeowners, and importantly what this milestone has meant for them, their children, and their community.
HSH Chair, Vanessa Chan, said the organisation’s reputation as an innovator, deliverer of high quality and value community outcomes and as a critical industry advocate and disrupter, has been reflected in the receipt of significant funds this year.
“Head Start Homes’ reputation as an innovator, deliverer of high quality and value community outcomes and as a critical industry advocate and disrupter, has been reflected in the receipt of significant funds this year. Of note is the ongoing financial support from our Founding Partner Westpac, the award of $100,000 from Impact Investing Australia to support the design of our Equity+ model; $110,000 from Lendlease towards our recycling Guarantees; $50,000 from the Snow Foundation; and $1.3m from Wollongong City Council to establish its first recycling home ownership program," she said.
HSH Founder and Managing Director, Stephen Woodlands, said HSH was empowering people to take charge of their own lives.
“Our vision is for a safe and stable home for everyone with fair and practical pathways into home ownership. By helping to create a more equitable homeownership system, we directly support economic empowerment, stronger and happier communities, and a reduction in intergenerational poverty,” he said.
“Since commencing our operations in late 2020, we’ve helped more than 70 people with our empowerment services and helped six households buy their own home, thereby freeing up an additional six social and affordable homes. We pride ourselves on being agile and innovative and always putting our clients at the center of everything we do. This has led to an added focus and understanding of the crucial importance of our Empowerment Services including our Head Start Savings Plans, which supports our clients to become mortgage and homeowner ready”
“We pride ourselves on having a fabulous community of like-minded individuals who are committed to making Australia a more equitable place to live. We pay special thanks to our fabulous Board, volunteers and the 100-plus organisations who have supported us since our inception,” Stephen said.
Our annual report also celebrates another major milestone: which is the successful recycling of our first two Head Start Guarantees, which means the funds can be used to help even more families into homeownership.
"We create head starts not handouts - that’s why our Guarantee is so powerful - capital raised keeps recycling to help many families over time," said Stephen.
Also featured within our annual report is the video launch of Chontell’s home ownership story with HSH. With special thanks to both Chontell and the Aboriginal Housing Office for allowing Head Start Homes to launch this heartfelt video.
Head Start Homes extends a huge thanks to all of our amazing volunteers, staff and partners. This includes our Founding Partner Westpac, Aboriginal Housing Office, Wollongong City Council, Lendlease, Impact Investing Australia, the Department of Social Services, the Snow Foundation, the NSW Government, NielsenIQ, Invia and Coates for providing essential grant funding; and Community Housing Ltd, and The Housing Trust for being referral partners.
