Happy NAIDOC Week!
Today is the first day of NAIDOC Week 2022 and Head Start Homes are proud and passionate celebrants of this significant week for all Australians today.
NAIDOC week is a chance for all Australians to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rich heritage, diverse cultures, and accomplishments as the world’s oldest surviving cultures.
Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! is the year's theme. It honours the courage and fortitude Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities have displayed against injustice throughout history, as well as their ongoing commitment to bringing about change now by rising up, standing up, and showing up.
It urges non-Indigenous Australians to educate themselves about our shared history, the injustices that Indigenous Australians have experienced and still experience, and how we may work together to bring about healing, transformation, and reconciliation.
Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural, and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together.
It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.
Getting Up, Standing Up, and Showing Up can take many forms.
We need to move beyond just acknowledgment, good intentions, empty words and promises, and hollow commitments. Enough is enough.
The relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights.
Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! with us to amplify our voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.
