It will mean I can wake up in the morning and have peace, go to sleep at night - peace - being able to be in charge of my own life, knowing the walls that surround me are my walls - the roof over my head is something I've earnt - self-respect
— Kamini, Head Start Homes Starter
Kamini is a single mom who has faced numerous challenges throughout her life. Since 1998, she has moved 23 times, with her son attending 10 different schools. This constant upheaval made it difficult for her to establish relationships and maintain self-respect, especially in environments filled with dysfunction and chaos.
In 2007, Kamini experienced a particularly tough time when she was evicted just before Christmas, leaving her uncertain about where she and her son would live. This experience was a turning point for her, motivating her to make significant changes in her life.
The news of becoming a grandmother further inspired her, leading her to work with Head Start Homes.
Despite initially working casually and struggling with savings, Kamini's determination paid off. She eventually secured a job and received the keys to her own home. This marked a transformation from merely existing to feeling driven and confident.
Kamini's journey from being homeless and living in a refuge to owning her own home is truly inspiring.
"I've gone from being homeless and living in a refuge to owning my own home. It's been a long journey, but with the support of Head Start Homes, I've made it. I hope my story can inspire others to believe in themselves and never give up".
Kamini's story is a powerful reminder of the impact that support and encouragement can have on an individual's life. Her resilience and determination have not only transformed her own life but also serve as an inspiration to others in the community. We are proud to have been a part of her journey and look forward to continuing to support many more individuals and families in achieving their dreams of homeownership.
